Today, we embark on a full day of shuttling and trail smashing as we enter the forbidden kingdom of Upper Mustang. First, we drive up to and beyond Muktinath to Gyu La (4077 meters). From the top of the pass, enjoy panoramic views of the valley behind us and up towards the famous Thorong La Pass. We can drive most of the way to the pass, but we have to push and hike for 15 to 20 minutes up and a little beyond the pass to hit the best trail. Starting at 4510 meters, we ride 13 km down to 3115 meters. The trail is epic, with good flow and fun, interspersed with some technical sections. The end of the trail can be quite challenging. We end the ride at Chuusang, where we have lunch. After lunch, we drive to Bhena La (3820 meters) and drop down to Chungsi Caves. This short but fun ride takes us to these ancient caves, believed to be over 2,500 years old. These caves hold significant historical and cultural value, serving as meditation retreats for Tibetan monks. Nestled in a remote and scenic part of Nepal, they offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into the region's rich spiritual heritage. After exploring the caves, our next shuttle takes us to Nyi La (4025 meters), from where we follow a fast and flowing single track down to Ghami (3510 meters). Ghami is one of the largest and most picturesque settlements in the region. Known for its traditional Tibetan architecture, the village is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and vast agricultural fields. The village also features long Mani walls, the longest in Mustang, adorned with prayer stones. Ghami serves as a significant cultural hub, offering visitors a deep dive into the unique traditions and lifestyle of the people in Upper Mustang. Accommodation: Teahouse

Today starts with a nice warm-up as we pedal through the village, soaking in the culture, and drop down to the river. Once across the river, we push our bikes for about 20 minutes uphill to Sang La (4000 meters). From the pass, we ride downhill into the valley of Dhakma, watching as the landscape changes and the red cliffs of Dhakma loom in front of us. Dhakma resembles a broad canyon, with towering cliffs carved with caves and the canyon floor rich in pasture lands fed by an underground water source. The trail down to Dhakma is all single track. After lunch, we have two shuttle runs, both starting from Muila Bhanjyang (4170 meters). The first trail takes us down the cliff face back to Dhakma, featuring a more technical switchback-like trail. The second trail is faster, longer, and flowing, as we carve a path through Yak grazing lands down to Charang. Charang, also known as Tsarang, is a historic village in Upper Mustang, Nepal, at around 3,560 meters elevation. It is renowned for its ancient monastery and palace, both dating back to the 14th century, and for its traditional Tibetan architecture. The monastery houses a significant collection of statues, thangkas, and ancient scriptures. Charang's library contains a wealth of ancient manuscripts and Buddhist texts, making it a valuable resource for researchers and scholars. This village offers a unique glimpse into the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Upper Mustang.

Today takes us to Ghar Ghompa, also known as Lo Gekar Monastery, a revered Buddhist site in Upper Mustang, Nepal. Believed to be one of the oldest monasteries in the region, it dates back to the 8th century. Ghar Ghompa holds significant spiritual importance, with legends linking it to the famous Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). Nestled amidst stunning landscapes, the monastery offers a serene and spiritual retreat, reflecting the rich cultural and religious heritage of Upper Mustang. From here, we join the trekking trail, which was once a Nomads' track, up through the rocks and into a valley where you can find Changra (domestic mountain goats) and yaks grazing. The trail is quite rideable in most places, though the altitude may require pushing some sections up to Chogo La. The pass meets another ancient Nomads' trail, leading into the remote region of Upper Dolpo. From the pass, we cruise down through the rocks and watersheds all the way to the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. This ride offers good views and brings you into the back of the city. After lunch, we shuttle up to Nomads Hill, a popular place where Yak herding nomads sometimes camp. Our trail back to Lo Manthang is a choose-your-own-adventure as you navigate through the Yersi (Yak pastures) back to Lo Manthang. The descent takes about 45 minutes.

One thing you wouldn't expect up here is a golf course, perhaps the world's most isolated and highest of its type. We drive here, not to play golf but to smash trails. It's a 1-hour drive from Lo, and the course sits at an altitude of 4700 meters. The trail takes us all the way down to Thinggar, from where we pedal on to Chhosser, a famous place in the region for visiting monasteries and caves. Take some time to delve into the mysteries of these hidden caves. Accommodation: Teahouse

We drive to Sam Dzong La (4020 meters), a high pass over the river from Lo Manthang. From here, we ride about 10 minutes to the trekking trail and then all the way downhill to Sam Dzong Village in the valley below. The trail at the start is quite gnarly and technically challenging. The village was, until recently, only accessible by trekking trail and is quite remote. The village is a very beautiful place to explore and visit the museum, immersing yourself in the local lifestyle. We then drive back up to the pass (Sam Dzong La) and smash some flowing single tracks back to Lo Manthang.

Leaving the ancient city of Lo Manthang behind us, we drive to Lo La (3950 meters), about 20 minutes away. From here, we ride to Dhi La (3950 meters) along an exposed ridgeline. From the pass, the trail plummets down a super fun and technical canyon trail, twisting and turning through the Himalayan sandstone walls. The last section of the trail before reaching Dhi Gaon (3890 meters) can be steep and loose. From Dhi, we drive across the river, entering the realm of rugged roads and remotes as we climb up towards Yara, where we check into the teahouse and have lunch. After lunch, we drive up to Lhetak (4795 meters). Very few tourists come into this area. From this high point, we shred the single track all the way back down to Luri Ghompa. We visit the Ghompa (Monastery), Luri Gompa, which dates back over a thousand years. It is famous for its ancient murals depicting Buddhist deities and mythical scenes. Perched atop a rugged hillside, Luri Gompa offers panoramic views of the Mustang region and stands as a testament to the area's rich spiritual and artistic heritage. After an intimate tour of the Gompa, we freeride back to Yara along the trekking trail.
